EL ALMA MAGAZINE
During Spring 2019, SDSU's Daily Aztec Newspaper created a specialty magazine in order to address the issue of sexual assault on SDSU's campus. I was tasked with designing a layout for a spread about a girl who had planned to stay abstinent until she was married but was assaulted by a male friend when she was in high school. Along with laying out the text, I had the idea to create various illustrations traditionally associated with marriage and to have them broken in a way, to represent the brokenness that she felt after she was assaulted.
Illustrations
A series of wedding-related symbols that are broken. I chose a smushed wedding cake, cracked wedding rings, champagne glasses that are clinking together (one is full and the other is empty), and a torn veil.

Typography and Color Palette
The fonts and color scheme used throughout the magazine were established in advance by the magazine's editor. However, I had a little bit of freedom in how I chose to use the colors provided.
Final Spread Photos
For the final spread I chose to layer the illustrations behind the text with a lower opacity (to maintain legibility). I created some contrast in the look of the spread by having one page with a colored background while the other page was white. The pop of color throughout the spread are contrasted by two black and white photos. There is also a variation in how the illustrations appear on each page.
